ABCDE Bundle Compliance and Outcomes

This study examined whether consistent use of the ABCDE bundle in the ICU is associated with better long-term recovery among critically ill adults. Patients cared for in units with high bundle adherence had better quality of life and greater independence in daily activities one year after hospitalization, although cognition or survival did not improve.

For trauma nurses, these findings reinforce the importance of evidence-based ICU practices that promote mobility, appropriate sedation, delirium prevention, and patient engagement as part of recovery—not merely survival. The authors also emphasize that the ABCDE bundle alone may not prevent post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), underscoring the need to identify patients at risk for ongoing physical, cognitive, and psychological challenges and to connect survivors with appropriate support after discharge.

Globally, Road Traffic Deaths Are Declining, Except in Low-Income Countries.

A new global analysis in Lancet Public Health reports that road injury and death rates fell by more than 30% between 1990 and 2023, though progress has been uneven across countries. Despite these gains, traffic crashes remain a major source of traumatic injury, claiming more than 1.1 million lives in 2025 and remaining the leading cause of death among people ages 5–29.

Particularly concerning is the global disparity: approximately 90% of road deaths occur in low-income countries, where vehicle safety features, seat belt requirements, and other injury-prevention measures may be less available.
