Is it Abuse or a Common Childhood Boo-Boo?

This week's article examines the distinguishing clinical and radiological features of abusive head trauma (AHT) versus accidental traumatic brain injury in children under age five. The authors found that victims of abuse are more likely to present with seizures, respiratory distress, and retinal hemorrhage, often leading to higher mortality rates. 

Conversely, accidental injuries are more often associated with skull fractures and specific patterns of brain bruising. Ultimately, the findings suggest that AHT is a distinct medical condition that may require specialized diagnostic approaches and targeted treatment strategies compared with those for standard accidents.
