Critical Kids: Phoenix Sepsis Criteria

Sepsis: so deadly to our trauma inpatients, yet so hard to identify and classify. This brief emDocs blog presents a new tool, the Phoenix Sepsis Criteria, that appears to outperform other sepsis screening instruments (e.g., SIRS, pSOFA)  for kids. The tool is straightforward, easy to use, and is scored based on PaO2:FiO2 ratios, the need for vasoactive medications, serum lactate levels, MAP, coagulation markers, and neuro status. Why do some TCAR/PCAR modules have a long list of competencies while others have none?

The number of Related Competencies listed at the end of every TCAR or PCAR module depends on the topics presented. For example, the BIOMECHANICS module has a short competencies list because most of the material presented (e.g., gravity, direction of impact) is conceptual rather than hands-on, like the thoracic module.
